The most wonderful time of the year is almost here, and cybercriminals are getting ready to strike. With Artificial Intelligence (AI) now a common part of their toolkit, scams are becoming harder than ever to spot. These advanced tools make it easier for scammers to create realistic emails, fake websites, and even lifelike calls or videos designed to trick you.
According to the FBI, consumers should expect an increase in scams involving fake websites, fake shipping notifications, fake charities, and “too good to be true” deals. That means now is the perfect time to be extra cautious when shopping online or donating to charities.
Mirroring the message shared with you during 2025 Cybersecurity Awareness Month, here are some easy tips to help you and your family stay safe while shopping online this holiday season:
- Verify Information – Don’t click on links in unsolicited emails or texts. Instead, navigate directly to the official retailer or charity website.
- Check URLs – Look for “https” in the URL and watch for misspelled sites (e.g., amaz0n.com) or unusual domains (e.g., .cn, .tk, .top, .wang, .xin).
- Use Strong Security Practices – Use strong, unique passwords when shopping online and enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) whenever possible. Consider using a password manager.
- Install Updates – Always install software updates when available. Turning on automatic updates helps protect your devices without extra effort.
- Avoid Public Wi-Fi – Public Wi-Fi can expose your personal information to cybercriminals through malware, man-in-the-middle attacks, and malicious hotspots.
- Protect Yourself from AI Trickery – Scammers are now using AI to make fraud more convincing than ever. Emails may look like they came from a trusted retailer, phone calls may mimic real voices, and even videos can appear authentic. Always pause before acting, verify the source, and never provide sensitive information in response to unexpected requests.
- Use Your Credit Card – Your MC Federal credit card adds a layer of protection between cybercriminals and your accounts. Plus, our credit cards offer additional benefits, rewards, and purchase protection.
Remember, if a deal, donation request, or message feels suspicious, it probably is!
